The Pet Connection was founded in Wautoma, Wisconsin in 1999. It was purchased August 15, 2001 by DJ Paeth and the business name officially changed to DJ's Pet Connection. One year later DJ moved the store to Redgranite, WI. where it stayed for 4 years. In 2007 it became necessary to move the store to a bigger busier location so the store was moved to 106 E. Huron Street in Berlin, WI. where it is now. DJ changed the store's name to DJ's Pet Shop making it easier for customers to remember. DJ has over 35 years of professional experience as a dog trainer (in several fields), an animal behavior specialist, a dog breeder, working with animals at zoos, and assisting veterinarians. Unlike the big pet stores where employees come and go DJ's Pet Shop is operated and maintained by the owner. DJ has to know ALL the departments in order to best suit her customer's needs. Big pet stores can't do that. Today you might get one person in a single department and next week it could be someone entirely new who has no full knowledge to help you with whatever it is you need or want. Not so at DJ's Pet Shop. DJ can give her customers that personal help whatever the need is.
DJ has extensive background with numerous animals and species. If DJ doesn't have the answer she has many resources available to find the answers and isn't ashamed to admit she is still learning new things all the time. DJ's lifelong work with animals, holding obedience classes, doing private evaluations as well as conducting dog owner workshops for people keeps her actively using her skills and vast knowledge on a daily basis. DJ has many repeat customers that have come in to get a 2nd and even a 3rd puppy or kitten from her. DJ sells handfed baby birds that are, when old enough, held and played with by people of all ages and therefore are very friendly. DJ and co-breeder, Kathy Johnson produce several different bird breeds which are sold in the store. DJ has other bird breeders that breed parrots, cockatiels, lovebirds and more exotic birds. DJ takes over the hand feeding so these baby birds become very familiar with her as her own birds do.
DJ's puppies and kittens are raised with families where they are exposed to and handled by children as well as adults. This assures that DJ's puppies and kittens are well socialized and outgoing. Puppies receive their first of a series of 3 puppy shots and are wormed. Kittens are wormed and at least one parent has been determined to be free of feline leukemia making sure that her kittens are free of this disease. Puppies and kittens become acquainted and play together at DJ's Pet Shop so if they go to a home with already established dogs or cats the puppy or kitten will feel at ease. DJ pays special attention in helping to prepare her puppies and kittens so they settle into a new home more quickly. As an animal behaviorist DJ knows how to go about this with the least amount of stress to her pets. It is for this reason that DJ offers her puppy buyers a Puppy Kit which contains everything a puppy should go home with. This includes a new crate, a bag of food, food/water dish, leash, collar, toys and treats. Every puppy deserves to have their own brand new things. When people put a new puppy into a used crate they are subjecting their puppy to a fearful experience. Puppies are smart enough to know they just entered another dogs' bed and should get out quickly. When the puppy is locked in they panic and want out. DJ feels strongly about puppies having positive and happy experiences when they go home so she may refuse to sell a puppy to anyone who won't buy a Puppy Kit from her at the time they wish to purchase a puppy at DJ's Pet Shop.
